BGIC Expands Its Monthly Zakaat Program Across Western Fiji

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain that grows seven ears; in every ear is one hundred grains. And Allah multiplies for whom He wills.” (Qur’an 2:261)

Alhamdulillah, by the mercy and blessings of Allah (SWT), Ba Global Islamic Care (BGIC) continues to expand its Monthly Zakaat Assistance Program, ensuring that more vulnerable individuals and families across Western Fiji receive regular financial support with dignity, compassion, and respect.

What began as a local initiative in Ba has grown into one of Fiji’s most comprehensive community-based Zakaat distribution programs. Through the continued generosity of our donors, BGIC is helping to ensure that those most in need receive consistent assistance every month.

Supporting Those Most in Need

BGIC has long provided monthly Zakaat assistance to eligible recipients in the FML Branches of Ba, Rarawai and Varavu. Thanks to the ongoing support of our donors, we have now expanded this program to include Lautoka, Tavua and Rakiraki, extending our reach across Western Fiji from Lautoka to Rakiraki.

This expansion has been made possible through a collaborative partnership with the Fiji Muslim League and its branches.

Each FML branch distributes the Zakaat it collects within its own branch. However, the amount available varies depending on local collections and is often insufficient to provide meaningful monthly support. BGIC supplements these local distributions so that every eligible recipient receives a higher level of assistance.

Today:

  • Recipients in Ba, Rarawai and Varavu receive FJD $130 per month.
  • Recipients in Lautoka, Tavua and Rakiraki receive FJD $110 per month.

Our short-term goal is to increase the monthly support in Lautoka, Tavua and Rakiraki to FJD $130 per month, ensuring all recipients across our service areas receive the same level of assistance. With the continued support of our generous donors, Insha’Allah, this goal can become a reality.

Making a Meaningful Difference

Today, BGIC provides monthly financial assistance to 221 eligible Zakaat recipients across Western Fiji.

Currently, every month FJD $19,060 in Zakaat is distributed to those most in need.

Our recipients include:

  • Elderly individuals with little or no income
  • Widows
  • People living with disabilities
  • Families experiencing financial hardship
  • Others who qualify to receive Zakaat under Islamic principles

For many recipients, this monthly assistance helps pay for food, utilities, medication, transport, and other daily necessities. More importantly, it provides reassurance that they have not been forgotten and that their community continues to care for them.

A Commitment to Transparency and Accountability

At BGIC, we recognise that Zakaat is an Amanah (trust) entrusted to us by our donors. We are committed to ensuring every dollar is managed responsibly, transparently, and in accordance with Islamic principles.

We are committed to a 100% Zakaat distribution policy. Every dollar of Zakaat entrusted to us is distributed directly to eligible recipients. No portion of Zakaat funds is used for administration, salaries, fundraising, or operational costs, and no payments are made to Fiji Muslim League (FML) branch officials or any other individual for distributing Zakaat. This commitment reflects our dedication to transparency, accountability, and ensuring that your Zakaat reaches those who need it most, exactly as intended.

To provide the highest level of accountability, all BGIC Zakaat payments are transferred directly into the bank accounts of recipients. No cash is handled during the distribution process, eliminating the risks associated with cash handling and ensuring recipients receive their assistance safely, securely, and efficiently.

As an additional safeguard, the Fiji Muslim League branches provide BGIC with monthly internet banking reports and receipt confirming that all payments have been received and successfully deposited into recipients’ bank accounts. This verification process ensures complete transparency and provides assurance that every allocated payment reaches its intended recipient.

BGIC also works closely with the Fiji Muslim League to ensure that every recipient’s eligibility is reviewed at least annually. Local FML representatives conduct home visits to reassess each recipient’s circumstances and determine whether they continue to qualify for Zakaat assistance or whether their needs have changed. This process helps ensure that Zakaat continues to reach those who are genuinely eligible while maintaining fairness, integrity, and accountability in the distribution of funds.

These governance measures reflect BGIC’s commitment to managing Zakaat with honesty, professionalism, and excellence, giving our donors confidence that their contributions are being used exactly as intended.

Looking Ahead

While we are grateful for how far this program has grown, we know there is still much more to do.

There are many individuals and families across Fiji who continue to face financial hardship and rely on the generosity of the Muslim community. Our vision is to continue strengthening this program, increasing the level of assistance where needed, and expanding our reach to support more eligible recipients in other communities across Fiji.

None of this would be possible without the mercy of Allah (SWT) and the generosity of our donors. Every contribution, no matter how great or small, helps provide dignity, stability, and hope to those who need it most.

The heartfelt duas and gratitude we receive from our recipients each month remind us that Zakaat is far more than financial assistance, it is an expression of compassion, solidarity, and our shared responsibility to care for one another.

May Allah (SWT) accept the Zakaat of all those who give, place barakah in their wealth, forgive their shortcomings, and reward them abundantly in this life and the Hereafter, Ameen.

Together, we are strengthening communities, restoring hope, and ensuring that no eligible family is left behind.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan for your continued trust and support.
